Tallaght Juvenile Athletes Bag Championship MedalsTallaght juvenile athletes bagged no less than 17 individual medals and 3 sets of relay medals over the course of the first 3 days of the Dublin Juvenile Indoor Athletics Championships, at Santry last weekend, with many from U12 level and over, earning their place for the National Championships, to be held in Nenagh in April.
Championship debutantes, Fionn Carroll and Eamonn Conroy set the standard for the rest of the squad after securing gold and bronze respectively in the U10 500m, whilst Evan Flynn, individual medallist in the 2007 National U11 Cross Country Championships, took bronze in the U12 600m contest.
Conor Murray took up the gauntlet in the U13 600m where led from start to finish to bag a second gold medal on the night, with Jade Johnston qualifying for her equivalent final with an easy win in her semi-final. At under 14 degree, John Daly, despite his best efforts in a very competitive 800m had to settle for 4th place.
The second day of competition brought further joy to the Tallaght contingent. In the 60m sprint events, Eamonn Conroy took the U10 title, Eoin Doherty bronze in the U12 contest and Conor Murray silver at U13 degree. Keith Doherty and John Daly both made the U14 60m final and in a very tight finish took silver and bronze respectively, with Rebecca Game adding another silver in the U18 300m. After qualifying from the previous evening, Jade Johnston battled well to take U13 600m silver, behind the 2007 National cross country champion.
The field events and relays were contested on the 3rd day of competition and the Tallaght juveniles added additional silverware. Eamonn Conroy took his 3rd medal of the Championships at U10 degree with some fine leaps which earned him silver in the long jump and Conor Murray took his second gold medal with a clear victory in the U13 high jump contest whilst in the girls equivalent age group, Amy Connaughton took silver to add to the bronze she won earlier in the shot putt contest. Aaron Conroy put together a series of throws which earned him silver in the U13 shot putt and Keith Doherty in his first long jump contest earned silver with his final jump of 4m52 at U14 degree.
The U12 4X100m relay squad, Sean Keane, Evan Flynn, Ronan Mc Eneaney and Eoin Doherty combined well to take the bronze medals and both Eoin and Sean Keane stepped up a year to combine with Conor Murray and Aaron Conroy to take the same colour in the U13 contest.
The U14 team, John Daly, Keith Doherty, Conor Murray and Sean Mc Cabe had an emphatic victory in their 4X200m final, whist the U16 girl’s 4X200m team, Teresa Mc Guigan, Laura Carroll, Emma Morrin and Robyn Reece just failed to make the podium in 4th place.
The final day of these Championships will take place on the 2nd March where Tallaght athletes will be vying for medals and National qualification in the U16-U19 200m and field event contests.Photos in Gallery Courtsey of John Denny
