There were some decent performances from a
number of our athletes at National level over the past few weeks.
Anthony Lieghio was again in top in Tullamore last weekend where he won
silver in the National Junior 800m contest in a time of 1.54.38.
Although this was almost a second short of his best of 1.53.51 which he
achieved at a Dublin County Board Graded League meet in Irishtown a few
weeks ago, it was a good run in less than ideal weather conditions. At
the same venue, Sean Bolger qualified for the 400m final but
unfortunately could not take his place due to a strained muscle.
Additional medal honours were gained at the National Senior Relay
Championships at the Mardyke in Cork at the end of June where Sean
Bolger, Gerard Purcell, Sherif Oyebanji and John Kelly combined to take
bronze in the 4X100m and later on the same afternoon both John Kelly and
Sean Bolger again took to the track and linking with Anthony Lieghio and
David Somerville they just missed the podium when finishing 4th in the
4X400m final. Prior to the senior competitions at the same venue Conor
Murray & Sean Keane finished 6th in the U12 National team contests where
they both competed in the 80m and long jump.
There will hopefully be further medal successes when our juveniles
contest the National Juvenile U13 – U19 Track & Field Championships on
14th/15th and 28th of July at Tullamore.
