Tallaght Athletes Do Well in Phoenix Park

By Cecil Johnston

Tallaght athletes were again to the fore in a number of events in the Phoenix Park last Sunday. At juvenile level, the Dublin Board cross country league 2 took place with a number of our competitors securing additional points to add to those gained in Donabate the previous week.

Jade Johnston was the first to score when finishing a good 3rd in the U11 800m , whilst Connor Murray finished 4th in the boy’s equivalent. In the U12 boy’s 1,000m contest, Killian Morris was first home for the club, followed by Sean Mc Cabe who improved his position from league one when crossing the line in 12th. Roisin O’ Hanlon maintained her position near the top of the U15 league table when taking 6th position in her 1500m contest, whilst Aisling Johnston did likewise when taking 3rd in the U16 2,000m contest, with Rebecca Game following her home in 5th. In the boy’s U16 3,000m event, Brian Connolly had another good run to finish second and was followed home in third place by Eoghan Hennessey.

Aoibheann Tierney also added points when finishing 5th in the U17 2,000m contest, with Carla Fullam following her home a few places further back, whilst Anthony Lieghio improved his standing in the U18 category with a clear cut win over 4,500m, with David Somerville, competing over the same distance, maintaining his position at the top of the U19 league table.

The Dublin Athletic Board Novice Cross Country Championships also took place at the same venue with our ladies team first to the line in their 3k contest, which included some tough hills. Katherina Baldinger was first home for the team with a super time of 11.45 and she will represent Dublin at the National Championships in Dundalk on December 17th.  Deborah Burgess, running her first ever cross country event was next home for the club in an impressive 14th place in 13.08, followed by Anne Marie Byrne in 20th (13.36), Fiona Mc Carthy 27th (14.12), Niamh Oman 28th (14.16), Colette Ferguson 31st (14.28), with another two debutantes, Susan Holland and Michelle Fitzpatrick doing very well to finish 32nd and 33rd respectively, in 14.40 and 14.49. Considering the team of eight included three athletes who were making their cross country debut, they should be very pleased with their fourth place in the team category, which makes them live contenders for future honours.

In the men’s 6k race, Mark Byrne also made his debut for the club and he should also be well pleased with his 30th place finish in a time of 21.54, 6 seconds ahead of James Crowley in 32nd with Martin Haddock next to finish in 43rd in a time of 23.46. Later in the afternoon, also in the Phoenix Park, Ronan Kearns unfortunately missed out on a top prize when he finished 4th in the Simon 4 mile road race.

Tymon Park will host round three of the juvenile cross country league on Saturday next 14th October, starting at 11am where many of our juveniles will be aiming to maintain and improve their standings
