Brian Gregan was again in devastating form at
the All Ireland Schools Track & Field Championships at Tullamore on
Saturday last. Competing for St Marks Community School the 16yr old
showed he has the potential to be a star of the future, when he showed
his opponents a clean pair of heels, with more than 2 seconds to spare
on his nearest rival in the Inter 400m, smashing the longstanding 26 yr
old record in a brilliant time of 48.65, just short of the 2007 European
junior championship qualifying mark of 48.50. The Dublin Juvenile
Championships in the next few weeks, and the National Championships and
schools international in July will provide opportunities to make the
mark.
In the senior 2k steeplechase, Robert Fitzsimons, conceding a year to
most of his opponents in this category, brought further joy for the club
and St Marks when he took the bronze medal, knocking12 seconds off his
previous best time for the event.
The Tullamore track also hosted the Leinster Senior Track & Field
Championships the following day and our club athletes again did us proud
with Roan Kearns winning silver in the 800m, beating his previous p.b by
3 seconds when running 1.57 and adding bronze in the 1500m, again
achieving another p.b by more than 12 seconds, clocking 4.07, whilst in
the 5,000m contest Davy Byrne again showed his consistent form when he
also took silver, adding to the 2nd placing he posted in meet 5 Dublin
grade “A” at Santry the previous Wednesday evening, where he recorded
15.16. Colm Barcoe finished 7th in the same contest, with Eoin Dunne
finishing ahead of Keith Sherlock in the 800m contest, recording 2.02
and 2.08 respectively.
These results followed two great runs by Eoin Dunne and David Somerville
the previous week when they contested the Leinster Junior Championships
in Navan, where Eoin won the 1500m in 4.16.58 and David won silver in
the 800m. in 2.07.72
Next up for our athletes are the Dublin Juvenile Championships at Santry,
with the relays taking place on Saturday 10th of June and the individual
events on 16/17/18th.
