D
avey Byrne wins the Oldest Race in the World
By Cecil Johnston

Billed as the oldest event of it’s type in the World, Davey Byrne was the first of the 130 contestants to cross the finish line in the 115th outing of the Clonliffe Harriers 2 mile road race, which started at Finglas and finished at the Grave Diggers pub in Glasnevin, clocking a good time of 9.23, with Niall Coppinger securing the top position in the vet’s category with his 6th place finish in a time of 9.53. Combined with club Captain Desie Shorten they took second award in the team category, making it a great outing for the club.

Elsewhere, Aisling Johnston secured the U16 title at the concluding meet of the Dublin Athletic Board Juvenile Track & Field league at Santry last Friday. After topping the table in the first 2 meets with wins in the 200m, 600m, 1200m and shot putt contests along with a second and 3rd placing in the 100m and discus respectively, she conceded some points to her nearest rivals when missing the 3rd meet. However, wins in the 1200m and Javelin along with a 3rd placing in the 150m sprint contest left her with a clear points advantage over her rivals to take the title.

In the other age categories some more of our juveniles including Jade Johnston (U11), Craig Henry (U11), Jonathan Fleet & Dylan Murphy both U12, Annmarie Mc Clean (U14), Roisin O’ Hanlon (U15) and Eoghan Hennessy competed in both track and field contests at a number of the 4 meets.

Ronan Kearns (149)

At Irishtown Stadium on Saturday last Ronan Kearns ran another good race when he contested the Ballygowan sponsored Irish Milers Club 800m B contest. Leading from the start he held the lead until the final bend where he was overhauled by three of the other contestants to finish 4th, matching his previous best time of 2mins flat, which he would have bettered in the absence of the strong blustery conditions on the night.

There was again some more good news for our Dublin Novice road race winning team, Nilton Demorez, Colm Barcoe, Bill Murphy and James Crowley. After the results of the Tom Byrne Memorial 5k were finally tallied, they were installed as the team winners, making it a double success in the combined event, which was held in Lucan a few weeks ago.
