The journey to the Limerick University sports
grounds last Sunday realized a good start for our men’s team in the
opening round of the Mazda Track & Field.
Pitted against Leevale, Bandon, KCH, Bree and Imokilly in pool 2 of
division 1, our men produced some very good performances to finish in
2nd place with a combined score of 101 points. Both Davy Byrne and
Anthony Lieghio produced maximum points with wins in the 5,000m and 400m
hurdles respectively, whilst Sean Morris produced two good seconds in
the 110m high hurdles and Javelin, as did John Kelly in the shot putt,
Sherif Oyebanji in the 100m, Sean Bolger in the 200m and Eoin Dunne in
the 3k steeple chase.
There were third place finishes for Gerard Purcell in the long jump,
David Somerville, triple jump, Ronan Kearns in the 1500m with both
Anthony Lieghio and Sean Morris securing additional points with their
third placings in the 400m and Discus respectively.
Thomas Fitzpatrick secured 5 points for his 4th placing in the 1500m and
combined efforts of our 4X100 and 4X400m relay squads added another 12
points for the 3rd place.
Unfortunately our women’s team did not fare as well against some stiff
opposition from 7 other clubs, however, Eve Riordan, Regina Coleman,
Carla Fullam, Bronagh O’ Hanlon, Stacey O’ Connor, Fiona Mc Carthy,
Stephanie Game, Aileen Connolly and Claire Murray did the club proud
with their competitive spirit on the day.
Also on Sunday last Killian Morris produced some great jumps to win
Silver in the U12 high jump at the National U12 juvenile Track & Field
championships in Cork IT Sports Grounds where club colleague Jonathan
Fleet also qualified for the final round of jumps and finished 5th
overall.
