Davy Byrne again set the standard for Tallaght
AC’s senior men when he contested the Clonliffe 5 mile open road race
which took place on the evening of 16th September last, around the
village of Ballyboughal in north County Dublin.
From the start Davy was to the fore with in group of five athletes who
remained together for most of the first four miles until Davy, Mick
Traynor (Raheny Shamrocks) and Serge Cibanu (Clonliffe Harriers) opened
up a gap on the rest of the field and fought out a battle over the final
mile where Davy triumphed in a sprint finish, crossing the line in a
time of 25.45, one second ahead of Cibanu, with Mick Byrne in 3rd.
This was Davy’s second Clonliffe award this year, having won the Tommy
Burton Memorial Trophy for their 2 mile race at Glasnevin earlier in the
summer he was presented with the Frank White Memorial Cup for this great
win.

Davy Byrne (462) – On his way to victory in the
Clonliffe 5 mile road race. |
Elsewhere our club captain Dessie Shorten, on
holiday in California, decided along with our club masseuse Sandra
Coleborn to take their chance in the Reno 8k road race. In less than
ideal conditions, very hilly course, 5,000ft above sea level, in very
hot conditions, and with 854 other competitors to contend with, they
both showed true grit and determination, with Dessie sporting the
Tallaght colours, crossing the line in an excellent 15th place overall
and claiming the top prize in the 045 category, with Sandra finishing a
very respectable 257th place overall.
