Brian Gregan, affectionately called “Grego” by
his fellow athletes was again centre stage at the recent Kit Kat
Leinster Schools Championships in Santry. Competing in the Senior 400m
contest he left his fellow competitors trailing in his wake when he
stormed to victory, breaking the previous record set by senior
International athlete David Mc Carthy, in an astonishing time of 47.49,
which surpassed his own previous best by more than one second.
Brian’s record breaking time was more than
enough to secure qualification for the World Junior Championships in
July. The KitKat National Schools Finals next weekend will provide
another opportunity to further reduce this record time and will be good
preparation for the World Juniors.
Anthony Lieghio was another to go top of the podium in the Leinsters and
he will also be aiming for National honours next weekend.
These two athletes undoubtedly have tremendous talent and if their
present form is anything to go by they both have a very bright future in
athletics.
Elsewhere, Thomas Fitzpatrick showed he is in top form when he claimed
second place in an excellent time of 25.06 behind Vinny Mulvey in the
Sportsworld 5 mile road race, where Christine Reardon and Luke Coleman
both went top of the podium for Tallaght in the Junior category.
