Tallaght juveniles secured three additional titles, 3 silver and 3 bronze over the course of the final two days of the Dublin Juvenile Indoor Track and Field Finals at Tallaght last weekend.
The U16 1500m final was one of the highlights on Friday evening with training partners, John Daly and Sean Mc Cabe again doing battle. After setting a strong pace from the start they gradually developed a comfortable gap on most of the field, and after two laps only had Peter Weakliam from WSAF who was comfortably sitting closely behind, stalking their every move to contend with. With 200m remaining the WSAF athlete made a decisive move which propelled him past the two Tallaght lads, but his brave effort was short lived, with Sean and then John passing him before the final 100 where Sean sprinted beyond recall to record his second win of these championships, with John taking his second silver in spirited fashion.
Over the same distance at U17 degree, it looked as if there was another win on the cards for Tallaght after Uchenna Uwechue stormed to the lead. However, it was not to be, as lack of experience of racing over 1500m saw his efforts peter out with 80m remaining, but he fought bravely in the dying stages to repel the challenge of team mate Philip Murray, who came like the proverbial train, just failing by the slimmest of margins to snatch the bronze medal from the 800m champ.
Roisin O’ Hanlon was another to do the double when she took the U19 1500m title and Niall Meehan secured the bronze in the boy’s equivalent in the same age category.
The final day of these championships was again hosted on our track and Tallaght fielded a large number of relays quads, with many in the younger age groups combining for the first time ever doing very well in the heats and reaching the finals and the more experienced squads such as the Boy’s U15, U16 and U17 reaching the podium.
Rebecca Casey, CiaraJordan, Nicole Fullam and Nadine Johnston Hickey finished 4th in the U12 4X100m final, after qualifying through the heats with the U14 boy’s Eoin Doherty, Sean Keane, Sean Flanagan, Evan Flynn and Ronan Mc Eneaney doing likewise in their 4X200m final with the U17 girls, Emma Morrin, Grace Kristensen, Ciara Henry and Heather Meehan also finishing in the same spot in their 4X200m.
James Ackerman, Seamus Noone, Sean Murray and Christopher Duffy combined in the U11 4X100m to take the bronze medals. Evan Flynn, Eoin Doherty, Dylan Kennedy and Conor Murray combined to win silver in the U15 4X200m, whilst Keith Doherty ran a blinder to take the U17 4X200m team, consisting of John Daly, Phillip Murray and Uchenna Uwechue, from 4th to silver medal podium position.
John Daly, Keith Doherty, Sean Mc Cabe and Conor Murray combined to take their 3rd title in as many years after they literally stormed to victory in the U16 boy’s 4x200m final.
Elsewhere last weekend, Keith Sherlock, Niall Coppinger, James Crowley, Dessie Shorten and Billy Murphy combined to take the team bronze in the “C” category of the National Inter Clubs Cross Country Championships in the Phoenix Park where Brian Connolly finished 6th overall in the Junior contest and was followed home by Sean Fitzpatrick, whilst Sean Connolly continued his preparations for Ballycotton with a great second in a 10,000m road race in Manchester.
