Good Run by Tallaght Athletes in Championships

Tallaght athletes produced some good runs in the Dublin Senior and Juvenile uneven age Cross Country Championships in Santry Demesne last Sunday.

Sean Connolly after his recent silver medal in the Dublin Novice Championships stepped up a grade to contest his first Senior Championship contest and he did exceptionally well when crossing the line in 10th position in a good time of 33.12 for the 10k run, claiming a place on the Dublin squad for the National Championships in Dungarvan in December. Davy Byrne was the next Tallaght athlete to cross the line in 26th, with Thomas Fitzpatrick who had recently finished 4th in the Intermediate Championships another 3 places further back, with Keith Sherlock finishing 46th.

Earlier in the day there were some solid performances from the juvenile’s who between them picked up 7 individual medals and 3 sets of team medals. In the U11 800m contest the club was represented by four debutantes and all ran exceptionally well with Evan Flynn leading them home when crossing the line in 5th to claim an individual medal and National qualification. He was followed home by Eoin Doherty who missed out by 1 place for automatic selection for the Nationals, crossing the line an unlucky 13th. Sean Keane was next in 18th, with Ronan Mc Eneaney, conceding a year to most of the other competitors, crossing the line in 26th. Their combined efforts were rewarded with team bronze and qualification for the Nationals.

Jade Johnston also conceded age advantage but put in a solid display to finish 8th in the U13 1200m contest, whilst the boy’s U13, John Daly, Conor Murray, Aaron Conroy, Keith Doherty and Sean Mc Cabe combined to take the team silver, with both John and Conor securing individual medals.
At U15 degree both Emma Morrin and Dylan Flynn both put in some sterling work in their respective 1500m and 2k contests, whilst Roisin O’ Hanlon secured the final medal and qualifying place on the Dublin squad when she stepped up a year to contest the U17 2k contest. Sean Fitzpatrick also had a solid run in the boy’s U17 4k event.

In the U19 and Junior 6k event Anthony Lieghio led Peter Fitzsimons and Luke Coleman home, with both Anthony (6th) and Peter (10th) securing individual medals and their deserved place on the U19 Dublin squad, whilst Luke’s brave efforts in 16th helped the trio secure the team bronze medals and qualification for the National inter club competition.

Our juveniles will be back in the fray next Sunday in Marley Park, Rathfarnham where they will contest the even age Championships, and they without doubt will pick up some more medals and qualification to the National Championships at the end of the month in the Curragh, Co Kildare.
