At the final weekend of National Juvenile Indoor T&F Championships in Nenagh last weekend, Conor Murray secured the silver medal in the U15 800m after a truly excellent display of grit and determination, which saw him narrowly miss out on the title and in the process, knock more than 4 seconds off his previous best indoor time for the distance.
Both John Daly and Sean Mc Cabe qualified for the U16 800m final, finishing 7th and 8th respectively, with the former improving his indoor p.b time for the distance by almost 2 seconds, whilst Roisin O’ Hanlon after qualifying through the semis finished 8th in her 800m final. Jade Johnston U15 and Uchenna Uwechue U17 found the going tough in their 800m semi-finals and despite their bests efforts failed to make the cut, whilst both Sean Mc Cabe and Keith Doherty suffered the same fate in their U16 200m contests.
The Tallaght U16 4X200m relay team, John Daly, Keith Doherty, Sean Mc Cabe and Conor Murray after winning their semi-final with ease looked likely to follow up on their ‘09 and ‘08 podium placings, but despite fantastic runs by the four and a new combined time of 1.40.84, which was 3.6 seconds faster than their previous best, they just missed out on the bronze by a mere .17 of a second.
Elsewhere on Sunday last in the National Road Relay Championships in Raheny, Derek Quinn, Dessie Shorten and Brendan Ryan combined to win the bronze medals in the O/50 masters, whilst the Junior Masters, Davy Byrne, Niall Coppinger and Keith Sherlock just missed out on the same colour by 5 seconds. Our Master women, Jaqui Boyle, Paula Murray and Sharon Tighe put in a great combined effort to finish well up in 5th place overall.
In Kentucky, Anthony Lieghio had another great run for Iowa Central when comfortably winning an 800m contest in 1.52.87, almost 3 seconds clear of his nearest rival.
