Lieghio Into Europe

After finishing second in the National U23 Championships in Tullamore where he clocked 1.51.76 for the 800m Anthony Lieghio vowed to make the European qualifying standard and he certainly lived up to his word at an International meet in Holland last weekend were he proved he was on top of his game when crossing the finish line in 1.48.17 almost 2 seconds clear of his nearest rival. He will without doubt and in his own words “wear the Irish vest with Pride” in the forthcoming European U23 Championships.

Anthony’s success certainly put the icing on the cake for the club after many more of the clubs athletes scored well in other recent competitions. Tomas Fitzpatrick also competed on the continent last weekend where he also had another good run over 3,000m, clocking 8.06.99 at a meet in Belgium whilst Sean Connolly ran 8.16.26 over the same distance at the Cork City Sports meet a few weeks earlier. This followed a previous outing in the BMC meet in Watford where both ran the 5,000m with Sean crossing the line in 3rd in 13.55 and Tomas in 14.11, and in between Sean had another good outing in Holland where he recorded 29.8 in a 10,00m contest.
