A Fruitful Trip to Wexford
By Cecil Johnston

Our senior athletes trip to Enniscorthy on Sunday last to compete in the inaugural Castle Sports 10k which was hosted by Slaney Olympic A.C. was certainly a fruitful one with individual and team awards secured in both the ladies and men’s categories.

More than 30 of our athletes turned out for this event and they certainly made their presence felt on a challenging course that included many hills and a final run in against a stiff breeze.

Davey Byrne certainly made his mark when crossing the line in 4th place overall, as did Katherina Baldinger when she was the 4th senior lady to finish with Laura Mc Donnell finishing 6th. Maura Kinahan ran another good race to take 1st in the O/35 womens category with Niall Coppinger equalling her feat in the O/40 male category.

In the team categories our runners again performed extremely well with the senior men, Davey Byrne, Keith Sherlock, Niall Coppinger and Nilton Demorez taking the 1st prize and our senior ladies team, Katherina Baldinger, Laura Mc Donnell, Deirdre Pitts and Naomi Mooney combing well to finish 2nd.

Our only junior competitor was Luke Coleman who worked extremely hard throughout the race and crossed the line to claim a well deserved 1st prize in the junior U19 category.

Overall it was a trip well worth taking with the full travelling contingent stopping off on the journey home to enjoy a well deserved meal, a few drinks and a bit of craic.
