Tallaght Duo Take National Honours
There were excellent performances by Anthony
Lieghio and Brian Gregan when both won National titles at National
Junior Track & Field Championship in Tullamore on Sunday last.

Anthony Lieghio
(228) National Junior U20 Champion |
Fresh from his victory in the Dublin Senior
800m Championships earlier in the week where club mate Thomas
Fitzpatrick won bronze, Anthony Lieghio lined up for the National Junior
U20 Championship. In a very tactically run race, Anthony found himself
boxed in on a number of occasions until he found a gap with less than
100m remaining to deliver his challenge which brought neck and neck with
two other athletes across the finish line. Unfortunately the momentum of
his final dash across the line caused him to keel over, resulting in a
broken collar bone, and if that wasn’t enough to endure, he had almost
1hr to on the results of the photo finish before being declared the
winner by the judges. This was as the saying goes “a costly victory” as
the injury has effectively ended his track season. However, on recovery
he will undoubtedly return more committed and determined than ever.

Brian Gregan
(211) Junior U20 200m champion, with Sean Bolger (371) behind |
Brian Gregan also continued his recent
brilliant form. Competing in the Junior U20 200m final, he had plenty to
spare over his rivals, who included club mate Sean Bolger (7th), when
crossing the line to victory in a time of 21.75.
